Diketones testing

primarily in e-liquids and also electronic nicotine devices containing e-liquids

What are diketones?

Diketones are chemicals that are used in the flavouring industry to produce a creamy buttery flavour. Whilst generally safe when ingested via food, they have not been shown to be safe when inhaled. TRPR/TPD prohibits the use of a number of diketones commonly used in flavourings.

Why should you ensure your e-liquids are diketone free?

Concerns have been raised regarding the presence in e-liquids of the diketones 2,3 pentanedione and diacetyl which have been linked with their potential to cause respiratory disease/lung problems, specifically “popcorn lung disease”. Their presence may be a primary source or potentially generated by glycerol (VG) and proplylene glycol (PG) when heated.

  • We prepare a 2ml or 10ml sample for analysis via liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), to detect the presence of the diketones 2,3 pentanedione and diacetyl. We use known diketone reference standards and compare them with the test samples. The resulting chromatograms are analyzed to detect the presence or absence of the 2, 3 pentanedione ad diacetyl.
